Do you know who put the Bible together? Do you know who is the first Catholic Pope?

The Catholics are the original Christians and they are the ones who put the Bible together. The Protestants didn't even exist until the 16 century when Martin Luther lead the Protestant reformation.

Catholics claim that Peter was the first Catholic Pope. At the very least he would be the one who founded the Christian church (remember no protestants existed back then).

Many Catholics will cite this passage where Jesus says:
Matthew 16:18: "You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church."

I have read the Bible and it does seem that Peter does get a lot of the lime light.

The reason why Catholics believe that faith alone is not enough is because of some of Jesus teachings:

Eucharist:
Jn 6:53 “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.”

You must "do" something or faith won't work:
Mt 7:21 “Not every one who says to me, ’Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

You must help the needy:
Mt 25:34 “Then the King will say to those at his right hand, ’Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ’Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?’ And the King will answer them, ’Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.’ Then he will say to those at his left hand, ’Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ Then they also will answer, ’Lord, when did we see thee hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to thee?’ Then he will answer them, ’Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.’ And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

And lastly:
Mt 7:24 “Every one then who hears these words and does them will be like a wise man who builds his house upon the rock.” And then, Mt 7:26 “Every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand.”

I am an atheist, but my father is Catholic and my mother is Protestant.

I don't understand your response. I just gave you examples from the Bible that says you have to do good works as well.

That's not what they mean by "good works". That's just keeping with tradition.

In case it wasn't obvious to anyone yet, I'm an atheist. Like Sam Harris, I find this to be a label that shouldn't have to exist, being a mere negative.
