Hi all,

I've had social phobia for about 25 years. My first recollection of it is when I hung out with a certain friend of mine at age 10, I remember that we had nothing to say to each other, and the silence was deafening to me. Even today, I fear and loathe silence. And my fear of silence in conversation causes me to be silent in conversation. What a shocker.

My main problem is that I simply get nervous when in conversation, and the nervousness impacts my ability to converse. The phobia normally chokes me up, where I am either silent, or forcing out unnatural conversation. I am drawn to people who talk a lot, so I don't have to drive conversation. I feel in my gut that my fears are based in a false belief that people won't like me.

I very much want to overcome this. I have a heart for people and want to enjoy people. But I tend to isolate a bit due to this phobia. It's like that there is a wall of fear that keeps me separate from whoever I am speaking with. My desire is to have this wall removed, so a sincere heart-connection can be possible.

I do believe that victory over this is in my future. I know that this demon can be cast out. I fully believe that. Perhaps this forum will prove to be a weapon in my warfare.

Welcome to the forums Brian. I do hope that this forum will provide you with a place that you can feel comfortable talking about your SA problems. This is a good place to practice talking to people and arm you to deal with the real world.
