Gimme' Your Money Please by Bachman-Turner Overdrive

Quote:
I was walking on down the alley
When a face I've never seen
Came so from deep in the darkness
And his mouth came on real mean

And I saw that he'd been liquored
And he staggered up to -- you know -- he staggered up to his feet
And he said, "Boy, you'd better move real slow
And gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Being born and raised in New York
There ain't nothing you won't see
'Cause the streets are filled with bad goings-on
And you know that's no place to be

But my car broke down in the evening
You know it just stopped stone cold
Stopped stone cold in the street
And a dirty mean man with sharp glass eyes
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Being born and raised in New York
There ain't nothing you won't see
'Cause the streets are filled with bad goings-on
And you know that's no place to be

But my car broke down in the evening
You know it just stopped stone cold
Stopped stone cold in the street
And a dirty mean man with a shotgun in his hand
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."

Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."
He said, "Gimme your money please."
(Awww!)

Can you point out the irony of this song?

I was getting at the "mugging" part of the lyrics. Or should I not call that Irony but something else?

He said move slow? He asked nicely for the money? I don't know, I'm not good at this xD
Well, irony is contrast between reality & opinion, or something like that isn't it?

The irony is that he was robbing the dude, but he still said "please"

^ That was my very own observation as well.

Pretty much one of those scenarios where you would probably wish a person said the opposite, do you agree?

As in the robber was not polite ? Probably true, though having never been robbed at gun-point I wouldnt know for sure. I was robbed at knifepoint once, but it all went so fast that afterwards I couldnt even have told you what the dude said.

What interests me more about this thread is the whole concept of irony. I'm told that Americans have some difficulty with this concept. Irony is used a lot in British Comedy, so maybe its just Americans dont see the humour in irony?

It is deffinetly a hard concept to grasp beacuse it deals in opposites - even though I know exactly what irony is, and when things are ironic, I would find it real hard to explain what irony is to someone.

I'm American :B. Irony is sometimes easy, sometimes difficult. I'm really not good at it though...

Some guy here in Ontario was robbing banks and was polite. All the bank clerks said he was very polite and respectful. He probably said please and thank you when robbing them.

Although in the streets of New York, that would be unlikely. Thats why the lyrics say:

Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
Wasn't that strange
Wasn't that strange indeed
